Get Back To Quiet › The Tinnitus Reset Call

Why Tinnitus Feels So Loud At Night, And The 10-Minute Daily Practice That Turned Mine Down

If the ringing gets louder the second the house goes quiet, read this before you buy another sound machine, supplement, or app. The volume isn't being set where you think it is.

Sleeping peacefully at dawn
What most people with tinnitus want back first: a full night's sleep.

Ringing. Hissing. A high whine that never fully switches off.

And here's the part nobody explained to me for years: the sound and the suffering are two different things.

Let me show you what I mean, because once you see it you can't unsee it, and it's the whole reason I got my life back.

Your Ears Make The Sound. Your Brain Decides How Loud It Is.

Illustration of a tangled loop in the mind loosening
The loop: sound, alarm, attention, louder, more alarm.

Think about the fridge in your kitchen. It hums all day. You haven't heard it in years. Then someone points it out, and suddenly it's all you can hear for ten minutes, until your brain files it back under "not important" and it fades again.

The fridge didn't get louder. Your brain changed what it was paying attention to.

Tinnitus works on the same wiring, with one cruel difference. Somewhere along the way your brain tagged the sound as a threat. Maybe it started after an infection, a loud event, a stressful year, a bad night. It doesn't matter how. What matters is what happens next:

That's the loop. And it explains the thing that used to drive me crazy: why is it fine at the restaurant and unbearable in bed? Same ears. Same sound. Different alarm level.

The ringing was never what stole my life. The alarm my brain attached to it was. And unlike the sound, the alarm can be retrained.

Why The Things You've Tried Kept Handing It Back To You

Sound machine and earplugs on a nightstand

I'm not going to trash anything on your nightstand. I owned all of it. But look at what each one is actually doing to the loop:

Masking (sound machines, fans, apps): piles noise on top of the sound so you can't hear it. Which teaches your brain the sound is something worth hiding from. The moment the machine clicks off, the alarm is right there waiting, often louder, because you just spent eight hours confirming it's a threat.

Supplements and drops: aim at the ears. The ears aren't setting the volume. I spent hundreds of dollars learning that.

"Just ignore it": is correct and useless. You can't ignore something your nervous system has flagged as danger. Nobody can. Telling you to ignore it is like telling you to ignore a smoke alarm going off next to your head.

"Learn to live with it": the five words every one of us has heard. Also correct, also useless, because nobody tells you how.

None of them touch the alarm. So none of them change the volume for long.

The Word Nobody Explains Properly: Habituation

Habituation is what your brain already does with the fridge, the traffic, the ticking clock, the feel of your watch on your wrist. It's the built-in process that moves a sound from "pay attention" to "background".

Your brain hasn't habituated to the ringing for one reason: it still thinks the ringing matters. You can't habituate to a threat. Nobody habituates to a smoke alarm.

So the real question was never "how do I get rid of the sound?" It was: how do I teach my nervous system that this sound is a fridge, not a fire?

That's a skill. It's learnable. And it is exactly what I had to learn, badly and alone, because at my worst there was nobody to teach me.

I Was Told There Was Nothing They Could Do For Me

An ear infection left me with screaming tinnitus and hyperacusis, where ordinary sounds hurt. I stopped sleeping. I stopped going out. I snapped at the people I loved. I was convinced I would never feel normal again, and I mean that literally.

It got so bad that after four or five days without sleep, anxious and sinking, I walked into a mental hospital. They assessed me and sent me home. They were kind. They also had nothing for me.

So I had to figure it out myself. I sat, badly, every day, with the sound fully present. I made every mistake there is to make. And slowly, then suddenly, the alarm let go. The sound faded into the background the way the fridge does, and then further.

Today I live in what I can only describe as virtual silence. Technically the tinnitus is still there. If I go looking for it in a dead-quiet room, I can find it. I haven't gone looking in years. Most days I don't hear it at all.

Since then I've walked people through the same process for over ten years, one at a time, on Zoom. Then I wrote the whole thing down, step by step, so people could do it without me.

The Fastest Way I Know To Start: 30 Minutes With Me, Then The Practice

It is not a sound. It's not a pill. It's not a gadget. It's a 10-minute daily practice that retrains your brain's response to the sound, the only part of tinnitus that's actually setting the volume. And the fastest way to get it right is not a video library. It's 30 minutes on Zoom with someone who's been through it, mapping your exact loop and handing you the first steps.

On the call I map where your loop is strongest (bedtime, the checking, spikes, the fear of it getting worse), show you The Sit, the core practice, and we do the first one together, with your ringing fully present. You leave with a written first plan. Most people have never sat with it once. Within days of doing it right, most notice the gap between the sound arriving and the alarm going off getting wider. That gap is where your life comes back.

And so you can keep going after the call, I include The Habituation Method, my self-paced course, free. Six short video modules, the day-by-day protocol, the worksheets. It sells for $147 on its own.

The five shifts we start on the call, and the course finishes

  • Shift 1: From the ears to the alarm. Why the volume isn't set where you think, so you stop pouring money into the wrong target.
  • Shift 2: From fighting to sitting. The Sit, taught step by step, with the exact instruction that makes it work when meditation apps didn't.
  • Shift 3: From checking to letting it pass. The 3am "is it still there?" reflex, and how to break it without willpower.
  • Shift 4: From spikes to weather. What to do on the loud days so a spike stays a spike instead of becoming a setback.
  • Shift 5: From managing to living. Restaurants, work, family, sleep. Taking the skill into the actual mess of your week so it holds.

One honest note. If, on the call, we both feel that more support would help, I'll tell you about my 1-month program. No pressure, no surprise pitch. Plenty of people take the 30 minutes and the course and get exactly what they needed.

What It Costs, And Why It's $47 Today

An hour with me one-on-one is $197. A 30-minute reset call is normally $97. The self-paced course on its own is $147. My month-long program with daily access to me is $497.

For readers of this article I'm running the 30-minute call at $47, with the $147 course included. Not because it's worth less. Because you don't know me yet, and I'd rather you find out for $47 than stay on the loop for another year deciding.

When this campaign ends the call goes back to $97 and the course goes back to being a separate $147, without notice. I'm not going to fake a countdown timer at you. I'm just telling you what I'm going to do.

Straight Answers

Is this going to make the sound go away?
I won't promise that, and I'd be careful of anyone who does. What this changes is your brain's response to the sound, which is what sets how loud and how intrusive it feels. For me that meant it faded into the background and then mostly out of my awareness. Results vary and depend on doing the practice.
I've meditated before and it made it worse.
Almost everyone with tinnitus has had that experience, because most meditation teaches you to relax away from the thing. The Sit does the opposite: you sit with it, in the same room, in a specific way, until it stops registering as a threat. Different skill, opposite direction.
How long until I notice anything?
It varies. Some people feel a shift in the first few nights, for others it's weeks. Habituation is a process, not a switch. The course exists so you do the process correctly instead of guessing for months like I did.
Is this medical treatment?
No. I'm not a doctor. This is education based on how the brain processes sound, and the practice that worked for me and the people I've coached. Keep your doctor. If your tinnitus is new, sudden, or in one ear only, get it checked first.
I have hyperacusis too. Does this apply?
I had both. The method works on your brain's response to sound, which is the root of both.
What happens right after I pay?
Stripe takes the $47, and the very next page is my calendar. Pick a time that suits you, in your time zone. You get the Zoom link by email, plus a link to activate the course so you can start module one before we talk.
Is this a sales call?
It's a working call. We map your loop and do the first Sit together, and you leave with a plan. If we both feel more support would help, I'll tell you about my 1-month program at the end. No pressure, and plenty of people take the 30 minutes and the course and are done.
Do I need any equipment?
A quiet-ish room, a laptop or phone for Zoom, and your ringing, which you already have.

One Last Thing

You've spent enough nights on this. You've probably spent enough money on it too, on things aimed at your ears when the volume was being set somewhere else.

The way out was never another thing to put on your nightstand. It was learning one skill that your brain already knows how to use, and pointing it at the sound. I did it alone, badly, in the worst week of my life. You can do it from a chair in your living room, with me on the other end of the call showing you the first step.

P.S. It's 30 minutes with me and the full course for $47 today, back to $97 plus $147 when this campaign ends, and if you leave the call without a plan you believe in you get the $47 back. Staying on the loop another month costs a lot more than that. Get instant access →
